A Pokemon's type determine what element their qi is connected to. Techniques that match that element naturally harness their qi more easily, and are, thusly, more powerful. However, certain types, and even certain Pokemon not of those types (Cubone comes to mind) are more adept to focus their qi in other ways. Qi is always the same, but it's the way it is focused and harnessed that changes elemental attacks.

We don't allow specific resistances to any species' weaknesses in any noticeable capacity, as it's something that was abused far too much, even after we disallowed it.
